New Cottage

This timber frame hybrid has a combination of structural and decorative timber elements.

The design of this cottage was challenged by the fact the screen room section of the original cottage had to remain. From this we designed the new portion incorporating the existing screen room and yet still creating a very practical and livable floor plan.

A key difference with this design is its kitchen. Three walls of the kitchen are without upper cabinets. Our client wanted an unobstructed view of the lake. Another feature giving this cottage an old world look is the traditional post and beam ceiling and floor structure over the dining area made from western red cedar. Wood flooring is reclaimed pine, refitted and finish for a spectacular look which adds to that cozy cottage feel. Le Page windows and doors round out this quality.

Energy efficiency was maximized by installing a propane tankless water heater which also supplies hot water to heat the cottage through an air handler and heat pump combination.

This project was awarded, Best Renovation Under $25,000.

The design involved the removal of existing walls and working within the existing floor space of the basement to install a bar, pool table and home theater. Space was at a minimum however, with careful planning and a solid understanding of space requirements we were able to complete all aspects of the project to perfection.

The home theater includes two rows of reclining sofa seating for 6. The back row seating is raised on a platform for improved viewing with theater style hidden rope lighting illuminating the raised platform. There is additional setting behind the counter which also offers room to place snacks and refreshments.

The 120″ screen offers a real theater experience. Sound is provided by a 7.1 surround sound system and custom designed subwoofer built into the counter behind the second reclining sofa hiding the large speaker. The ceiling and interior walls were sound proofed. All of the electronics are built into the side wall installed into a custom cabinet which is accessible through the rear via an adjacent room allowing very easy access to component’s the wiring.
